5 Ways to Help Your Child Overcome Failure and Keep Trying

Children grow through failure, but it’s not always easy for them. As parents, we can help them learn that failure is not the end—it’s just a step toward success! Here are five simple ways to help your child get back up and try again.

1. Give Your Child a Challenge Slightly Harder Than Their Ability

Encourage your child to try something just a little harder than what they can already do.

If they usually solve 5 math problems, ask them to try 7 problems.
If they run 1 mile, challenge them to run 1.2 miles.
They may struggle at first, but when they succeed, they will feel more confident to try new things!

2. Don’t Say "Do Your Best!"—Say "Try as Much as You Want!"

The phrase "Do your best!" can feel like too much pressure for a child.

Instead, say "Try as much as you want!"
When kids feel they are in control of their challenge, they will try harder and keep going, even if they fail.

3. Don’t Take Failure Too Seriously

If parents overreact to failure, kids will start to fear it and avoid challenges.

Instead, stay positive and say, "That’s okay! You’ll do better next time!"
If your child makes a mistake, try to think, "What if my friend’s child did this? How would I respond?"
Taking a step back will help you react calmly and support your child better.

4. Teach Your Child to Admit Mistakes

It’s important for children to accept mistakes so they can fix them.

If your child fails, ask, "What do you think went wrong? How can we do it differently?"
Help them learn, but don’t pretend that failure is success. It’s okay to fail, but it’s also okay to try again!

5. Never Leave Failure As It Is

Failure can be a stepping stone to success, but only if kids try again.

If your child fails, encourage them to try again.
Remind them that every failure is a chance to learn and improve.
Say, "Last time it was difficult, but what can we do better this time?"
